One of a Kind Gin

By: Richard Guthrie

About 1938, the Alabama Agricultural Experiment Station, Auburn University, obtained a Continental gin for cotton research and teaching on the Auburn campus. About 2003, the University selected the site of the gin building for a parking deck and a new IT building. As a college administrator, I worked with colleagues to preserve the gin by dismantling it and storing it in labeled containers. Because the gin was one of a kind, we envisioned the possibility that it could be restored in an agricultural heritage facility. It remains safely in storage and I have numerous photos of all the parts. We also have diagrams of the gin. I believe that this gin would be an excellent centerpiece for the gin shop in the redeveloped facility of HPRA.
